Compassion is that state when we see all living beings as part of our own self, and when everyone's suffering is seen as our own suffering. It springs up by considering that all beings, like ourselves, wish to be free from suffering, yet despite their wishes continue to be afflicted by pain, fear, and sorrow. We feel another’s woes as our own. But compassion is also more than just a placid state. It is an active force.
